Moniuszko statue speaks out

On 27 June the statue for Stanisław Moniuszko in Vilnius, Lithuania broke its decades-long silence and spoke in the voice of Maestro Donatas Katkus. Thanks to the joint efforts of the organisation Gatvės gyvos, the local authorities of Vilnius and the Saint Christopher Festival, the oldest statue in the city has just joined the Talking Statues project run by MO Museum. Marcin Łapczyński, Director of the Polish Cultural Institute in Vilnius, said he is happy that as of now the city’s residents and tourists will be able to call Moniuszko and learn ore about the time he spent in Vilnius, where he lived from 1840 to 1858. The Institute and the Polish embassy are working to enable the statue to speak in Polish as well.
